  • Voith and Liebherr enter a partnership to develop, market and service diesel engines specifically intended for rail vehicle applications

Today, Dr. h.c. Dipl.-Ing. (ETH) Willi Liebherr, President of the Administrative Board of Liebherr-International AG and Dr. Uwe Knotzer, Member of the Corporate Board of Management of Voith and Chairman of the Management Board of Voith Turbo, unveil the ˮVoith Rail Engine” at InnoTrans in Berlin. Showcased as one of the trade fair highlights of global technology group Voith, the powerful and low-emission engine for rail vehicles is the result of joint development efforts of both technology-leading companies.

Under the Motto ˮDrive New Waysˮ Voith and Liebherr showcased their innovative ˮVoith Rail Engineˮ for the rail industry at InnoTrans 2018 in Berlin. In addition to the unveiling of the engine, Knotzer and Liebherr provided insights into the current development status of the product, which will be available in 2020.

Joining forces for technology leadership

During the joint presentation at booth 215 in hall 1.2, Knotzer and Liebherr shared their excitement about what the cooperation had brought so far: ˮWith this partnership, we clearly demonstrate our comprehensive approach to shaping the mobility of the future. We combine our expertise in rail traffic with Liebherr’s long-standing experience as an engine manufacturer. We are delighted to offer state-of-the-art, cutting-edge railway drive solutions to our customers”, explained Dr. Uwe Knotzer, Member of the Corporate Board of Management of Voith and Chairman of the Management Board of Voith Turbo.

Dr. h.c. Dipl.-Ing. (ETH) Willi Liebherr, President of the Administrative Board of Liebherr-International AG, added: ˮTogether we have developed a highly efficient and robust engine for the rail industry. It combines the strengths of the two technology leaders to an equal extent. We are very pleased with the outcome.”

All eyes on the most efficient diesel engine in the industry

The technical data of the six-cylinder unit are convincing: with an output power of up to 480 kW the engine offers a maximum torque of 2,800 Nm. This means, it delivers up to 23 percent more power and consumes up to eight percent less fuel than comparable engines. Furthermore, the new engine has the lowest emission values amongst all similar outputs and meets the new ˮStage V” emissions standard of the European Union. The new drive solution is the first milestone of the cooperation entered into by Voith and Liebherr in September 2017.
