Fuel cells for propulsion and power generation
Liebherr is supporting Airbus on the way to develop the world’s first hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft. As part of this initiative, Liebherr has designed and delivered a 1 MW air supply system demonstrator for Airbus testing facilities. The next phase involves creating a flight-ready air supply system capable of operating under real-world conditions, supporting a flight test campaign to validate hydrogen fuel cell propulsion.
In addition, Liebherr is exploring innovative materials and manufacturing processes to lower fuel cell system costs and improve scalability. Collaboration with universities, research institutions, and industry partners is advancing fuel cell development for aviation, rail, and automotive industries. One key project focuses on using hydrogen fuel cells to generate 400 kW of electrical power for non-propulsion systems in next-generation single-aisle aircraft.
To support this effort, Liebherr has installed a dedicated hydrogen test bench at its Toulouse test center, enabling assessment in a representative environment.
