Investment in innovation: Aguado purchases narrow-track LR 1700-1.0W crawler crane

  • The Liebherr LR 1700-1.0W is the most powerful narrow-track crane in the Aguado Group's fleet.
  • New procurement is part of Aguado's fleet modernisation investment programme.
  • First deployment at the Cascante wind farm in Navarra.

The Aguado Group has taken delivery of a Liebherr LR 1700-1.0W. With the new narrow-track crawler crane, the Spanish company is expanding and modernising its high-performance machine pool. The 700-tonne lattice boom crane meets customers' growing requirements and offers them innovative technical solutions. The LR 1700-1.0W offers versatility, economical transport, high load capacities and a state-of-the-art variable boom system.

Since the company was founded, Aguado's focus has been on offering its customers the best service through innovative machinery. For this reason, the decision was made to invest in the Liebherr LR 1700-1.0W crawler crane, which is now the most powerful narrow-track crane in the fleet. "The LR 1700-1.0W is a very versatile crane that is easy to move. And it is significantly more powerful than its predecessor, the LR 1600/2W," says Mario Aguado, Head of the Aguado Group's wind power division.

"The procurement of the Liebherr LR 1700-1.0W crawler crane is part of our investment and fleet renewal plan, whereby we are focussing on modern and innovative crane technology," says Mario Aguado. "We must always provide the best possible response to our customers' needs. The fact that we have this crane in our fleet together with the Liebherr models LG 1750, LR 11000 or LR 1600/2-W fills us with pride and shows that we always want to offer our customers the highest quality standards."

Aguado values Liebherr lattice boom cranes for their high lifting capacities, both with and without derrick systems, their versatility, their modern variable boom systems and optimised dimensions, which guarantee economical transport. The narrow-track version of the LR 1700-1.0 was launched at the beginning of 2024 and is specially designed for use in wind power. "It's a very specific crane for this task," emphasises Mario Aguado.

First job – Cascante wind farm

Aguado's new LR 1700-1.0W crawler crane is already proving its capabilities on its first job: during the assembly of eight wind turbines at the Cascante wind farm in Navarra with hub heights of 119 metres.

However, the new 700-tonn-crane is nowhere near its performance limit, as it is designed for the assembly of modern wind turbines with hub heights of up to 170 metres. It offers significantly higher load capacities and hub heights than its predecessor, the LR 1600/2-W. The basis for this is a more powerful basic machine as well as the 3.5-metre-wide H-lattice type sections in the lower area of the main boom, which increase the lateral stability of the entire system. Liebherr also offers the LR 1700-1.0W with a luffing jib. This option was not available for its predecessor.

The fact that more than half of Grupo Aguado's machinery comes from Liebherr is no coincidence. "Liebherr is the leading manufacturer in the industry and offers outstanding service," says Mario Aguado. The Liebherr fleet at Aguado includes various models of telescopic cranes with a lifting capacity of up to 500 tonnes. The Liebherr LR 1600/2, LR 1600/2W, LR 1700-1.0W and LR 110000 crawler cranes and the LG 1750 lattice boom crane are available for large tonnages.
