Vestas opens an assembly line for wind turbine nacelles on Liebherr site in Russia

On the Liebherr site in Nizhny Novgorod (Russia), Vestas opens a nacelle assembly line for 3.6 MW wind turbines. Thereby, Liebherr provides Vestas with a production hall and services.

Around the world, wind turbine manufacturers are increasingly relying on efficient and flexible solutions to meet the growing demands of the wind industry. The wind market in Russia is steadily developing and offers vast potential for further growth. Considering the economic potential, Vestas Wind Systems has decided to open a nacelle assembly line for 3.6 MW wind turbines on the Liebherr production site in Dzerzhinsk near Nizhny Novgorod. The Liebherr Group has been a long-standing partner of Vestas, providing the wind turbine manufacturer with a production hall and services. Hence, the turbines not only feature Liebherr hydraulic cylinders, but also slewing bearings and drives to contribute to the local value chain.

The Liebherr Group has been present in Nizhny Novgorod since 2006. Liebherr-Nizhny Novgorod OOO manufactures steel assemblies for earthmoving equipment and tower cranes. Crane assembly to customer-specific requirements for the Russian market are also on the company's programme. Liebherr-Aerospace Nizhny Novgorod OOO produces key components for flight control and actuation systems and supplies both the Russian aerospace industry and the Liebherr-Aerospace plants in Germany and France. Liebherr has over 800 employees on site in Dzerzhinsk.

Such an extensive set-up made Liebherr a suitable partner, able to offer optimum support to Vestas in the Russian market. The total surface area of the site of around 120 ha is perfectly suited for the handling, storage and assembly of large components. Production was launched in April 2018. Liebherr has provided the required work force to tackle this new task.
