Liebherr supplies series-produced propane-based HVAC systems for the first time

  • HVAC units developed by Liebherr use R290 (propane) as natural refrigerant
  • Delivery of 80 saloon HVAC units, 80 heat recovery units and 40 cab units will start in September 2024 and end in December 2026
  • Units will be integrated in Stadler’s single-decker FLIRT electric multiple units operated in Finland

Liebherr-Transportation Systems was commissioned by train manufacturer Stadler Polska to supply HVAC systems with a special feature: The coolant used is propane, a natural refrigerant, which enables more sustainable cooling. This is the first time that Liebherr supplies series-produced propane-based HVAC units.

Liebherr-Transportation Systems will supply the rail vehicle manufacturer Stadler Polska Sp. z o.o. with 80 heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems that use propane as refrigerant (R290).

This order marks a special milestone for Liebherr-Transportation Systems as the company will supply for the first time a series-produced HVAC system using propane. The technical concept, which considers all relevant safety requirements, was developed in cooperation with TÜV Süd. Propane as a refrigerant offers a natural alternative to conventional, environmentally harmful refrigerants. In addition, the system is easy to service and guarantees rail operators a reliable product solution with minimal down time.

The delivery takes place from mid-September 2024 until the end of 2026 and comprises HVAC systems for 20 electric multiple units of Stadler’s FLIRTs (Fast Light Intercity and Regional Trains), including 80 saloon HVAC units, 80 heat recovery units and 40 cab units. The trains will be operated by the Finnish government-owned railway company VR-Group. They will serve regional transportation in, for example, the regions of Helsinki, Tampere and Lahti. A four-carriage FLIRT offers space for up to 800 passengers.

Pascal Rapp, Sales Area Manager East at Liebherr-Transportation Systems, commented: « We are very thankful for the trust Stadler Polska has placed in us. Our climate control system offers a sustainable and efficient solution for vehicle manufacturers and operators. Propane has a Global Warming Potential of only 3, which is significantly lower than many synthetic refrigerants. We have selected propane for our HVAC system and thus offer a solution for a more sustainable mobility. »
