Fortescue receives first T 264 haul trucks

In October, Liebherr Mining delivered the first T 264 haul truck to Fortescue’s Eliwana mine site in the Pilbara, Western Australia. These trucks form part of a deal for 120 zero emission T 264 trucks to be deployed to Fortescue by 2030. The initial delivered units will be diesel powered and converted to Fortescue’s in-house battery solution – developed by Fortescue WAE – before the end of the decade.

Fortescue Metals Chief Executive Officer, Dino Otranto says, “We’re really excited by the delivery of our first T 264 truck from Liebherr, which marks an important step in our decarbonisation journey. Our partnership with Liebherr is a true example of industry collaboration with a shared vision to decarbonise and eliminate emissions. There will be a phased supply of zero emission haul trucks from Liebherr with the first battery-electric production trucks anticipated to arrive at our Pilbara operations in 2026.”

A partner for the long term

Even before the zero emission technology is installed, these T 264 trucks will be offering Fortescue impressive onsite performance as the combination of their powerful engines and Liebherr’s electric drivetrains provides fast speed on grade.

“Liebherr prides itself on offering products that not only serve customers well in the short term but continue to be of benefit for years to come,” says Trent Wehr, Managing Director of Liebherr-Australia. “Our T 264 trucks’ ability to integrate future solutions – such as battery technology – while also providing tangible results today demonstrates our commitment to being a reliable partner for our customers well beyond the initial handing over of a machine.”

Liebherr and Fortescue are currently within the two-year joint development period of their partnership.
