Morrow Equipment Co. chooses five Liebherr 542 HC-L 18/36 tower cranes for Resorts World Las Vegas project

  • Robust capacity of cranes helps new hotel and casino mega-project stay on schedule
  • 75% of company’s fleet is comprised of Liebherr tower cranes

Five Liebherr 542 HC-L 18/36 tower cranes were instrumental in helping Las Vegas’s newest landmark take shape from the ground up. Morrow chose the Liebherr 542HC-L 18/36 cranes for their robust capacities and fast line speeds. Located on the north end of the world famous Las Vegas Strip, the five cranes all reached a hook height of 686 ft.

Resorts World Las Vegas is a multi-billion dollar resort and casino project that’s slated to open in 2021. Located on the former site of the Stardust Resort and Casino, the new hotel and casino will have two towers, about 3,500 rooms and suites and 350,000 sq ft of meeting and banquet space. With a cost of $4.3 billion, it will be Vegas’s most expensive project of its type to date.

The 542HC-L cranes are being used for all construction activities, such as setting steel, and placing concrete and forms. Luffing jib cranes such as the 542 HC-L 18/36 are designed for working on tall buildings or in particularly small spaces. HC-L cranes allow level luffing. When moving the load, the controller automatically adjusts the hoist gear so that the load hook is moved horizontally.

Morrow’s customer, Las Vegas-based W. A. Richardson Builders LLC, selected the cranes with the assistance of Morrow’s team based on their reliability, capacity and line speeds. Morrow’s exceptional service and vast spare parts inventory made the choice very easy for the customer.

“Morrow continues to be the leader in the industry, maintaining a young fleet of Liebherr tower cranes,” said Morrow’s Vice President of Operations Peter Juhren. “Our strong relationship with Liebherr coupled with our expertise in the tower crane industry ensures a seamless experience for our customers. We continue to work out complex projects for our customers, working several high profile jobs currently, including the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant nuclear reactor project in Georgia, and the new Microsoft Campus in Washington state.”

Established by brothers John and Richard Morrow in Salem, Oregon in 1968, the company started with just a few tower cranes. Morrow expanded substantially when it became the exclusive distributor of Liebherr tower cranes in North America in 1979. Today, Morrow is one of the largest tower crane companies in the world. The company has experience with all types of construction projects –commercial buildings and hotels, residential properties and stadiums. Morrow employs 330 and has a fleet of 571 cranes.
