Alternative fuels for combustion engines
HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a complete and climate-neutral diesel substitute made from vegetable and waste oils and waste fats. It is already available in many countries and it can power a large proportion of Liebherr construction machines, mobile harbour cranes, mobile and crawler cranes and mining machines.
Battery-electric drive
All-electric drive for working and drive hydraulics. Sepp Eisl has been participating in a long-term test operation with a new, emission-free wheel loader on his farm and campsite. „The electric wheel loader has surprisingly high pulling power and smoothly running, extremely sensitive controls for absolute application versatility,” he says.
Mains-powered electric drive
Cable-connected work on the mains. The R 950 Tunnel-E crawler excavator features an electric power system that can be connected to the power supply directly with its own cable or via an optional cable reel. For greater flexibility, a battery-powered travel kit is available as an option, to ensure improved temporary mobility without a cable connection to the mains. This newest innovation from Liebherr-France SAS in Colmar is a model perfectly tailored to underground sites.
Hydrogen combustion engine
Works similarly like a conventional diesel combustion engine, but with significantly reduced pollutant emissions. Suitable for heavy-duty applications in demanding environments, such as the construction and mining industries. The first Liebherr hydrogen engine, H666, is the heart of the hydraulic excavator R 9XX H 2. This evolution won the innovation award 2023 in the climate protection category.
Diesel-electric drive
Reliable diesel combustion engine coupled with future-proof electric drive for maximum modularity. This type of drive is particularly advantageous for very high performance, coupled with very long running times. The mining truck T 264 has a unique combination of a high-horsepower engine (2,700 hp), an efficient Litronic Plus AC drive system and powerful electric wheel motors (4,425 hp).
Fuel cells
Hydrogen-powered fuel cells supply electric engines with power, operate emissions-free and have a higher degree of technological maturity than hydrogen combustion engines. However, fuel cells have not yet been adequately tested for use in construction machines operating in challenging environmental conditions.
Liebherr Aerospace is currently working with General Motors to research how hydrogen fuel cell-based electricity systems can be used in aircraft.
