Zero emission, full power: The world's first LTC 1050-3.1E goes to Mammoet

The globally operating Dutch crane and heavy haulage company Mammoet has taken delivery of the first electrically driven Liebherr mobile crane. The LTC 1050-3.1E is equipped with an electric motor in addition to the conventional drive. Crane movements can thus optionally be carried out using electricity. The new variant of the compact Liebherr 50-tonner thus contributes to CO2 reduction and meets the requirements for operation on "zero emission" construction sites.

The LTC 1050-3.1E is the first electrically powered hydraulic crane in the Mammoet fleet. Peter van Oostrom, Director Global Projects and Assets at Mammoet, explains the decision for the 50-tonner: "Cranes in the 50-tonne range are ideal for testing innovative technologies, as these machines are in operation for Mammoet around the clock. This allows us to offer new technologies to the largest possible number of customers and put them through their paces to quickly prove their suitability for everyday industrial use."

The Liebherr LTC 1050-3.1 E mobile crane is the next step towards emission-free lifting - and without compromising performance. It was therefore logical for Mammoet to choose this first electric version of the LTC 1050-3.1E. The crane will complement our existing mobile fleet and provide an attractive option for customers who want to reduce the CO2 impact of lifting operations. This groundbreaking crane sets the standard for zero-emission lifting that others will follow," says van Oostrom.

Mammoet also highlights the compactness of the LTC 1050-3.1, which offers greater flexibility when taking on jobs in tight locations, especially indoors, where both its zero emissions and noise reduction in electrical operation are particularly important. Mammoet ordered the crane with Liebherr RemoteDrive for these operations. This allows the vehicle to be optimally controlled with remote control with centimetre precision under the tightest conditions.

Mammoet, with branches worldwide, is a highly specialized company for a wide range of crane and transport work, offshore work, complete assembly and turnkey projects. It employs nearly 6,000 people and operates more than 1,300 cranes of various types. Around 500 mobile and crawler cranes are made by Liebherr. Maximum flexibility for maximum environmental compatibility and customer benefit.

The electric version of the LTC 1050-3.1 offers the best possible combination of environmental compatibility, customer benefits and efficiency. On and off the road, the 50-tonne crane is powered by a conventional and low-emission combustion engine with exhaust emission stage 5, delivering 243 kW (326 hp). The engine can be fed without restriction with hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), which already saves up to 90 % of CO2 emissions in operation, compared to pure diesel drive.

In crane operation, the combustion engine or electric motor can be flexibly selected depending on the operating conditions. The newly developed drive with electric motor offers an output of 72 kW and thus enables unrestricted crane operation, i.e. with almost the same performance as when using the 6-cylinder engine.

In the electric version, the conventional model of the LTC 1050-3.1 is joined only by the electric motor and a transfer case, as well as the necessary control technology. The transfer case is located directly between the crane pump and the powershift transmission. This clever yet simple solution allows flexible switching between diesel-hydraulic and electro-hydraulic drive. Site power of 125 amps is required for full performance, but operation is also practical with 63 amps. Alternatively, the crane can be operated with an external "battery pack", for example with the Liebherr energy storage system Liduro Power Port (LPO), if the construction site does not have a corresponding electrical infrastructure.
