Above the roofs of Paris

A 202 EC-B 10 Litronic was used at an altitude of 110m on the roof of the “Grande Arche” in the modern La Défense high-rise area of Paris. The Flat-Top crane was erected on rails to complete the roofing and façade work on the Grande Arche. With a travel distance of 60m and a jib length of 60m, the 202 EC-B 10 Litronic can easily cover the site.

The best alternative: Erecting the crane using the 200 DR 5/10 Litronic

As a result of the site conditions and the great height, erecting the crane using the 200 DR 5/10 Litronic Derrick proved to be the best alternative. Heavy vehicles are not allowed in the area around the building since the pavement slabs in the pedestrian zone are not designed for these heavy loads. That meant that completing the erection process with a mobile crane could not be considered.

Efficient logistics

The Liebherr Derrick was taken to the roof of the Grande Arche in parts using a site elevator. The Derrick was then erected before starting on the erection work for the 202 EC-B 10 Litronic.

A special steel structure was made for both cranes to distribute the load evenly into the building. The distance between the bearings for the track is up to 21m. This was the only way to direct the corner pressures of the crane into the load-bearing structure of the building. The track gauge is 6m.

The solution

The main challenges involved planning and logistics. Every hoist by the 200 DR 5/10 Litronic Derrick for the smooth erection of the 202 EC-B 10 Litronic was planned in advance in minute detail. The Tower Crane Solutions Department at Liebherr-Werk Biberach GmbH worked closely with Liebherr-Grues à Tours SAS, Niederhergheim to provide the customer with excellent advice and support during the work.

Project implementation

The Eiffage Group won the order to renovate the roof, the office spaces and the facade of the Grande Arche de la Défense. The roof of the “Grande Arche” will once again be open to the public, the modernised offices ready for use and the facade refinished by 2017.
