Closing the gap: Wertz-Autokrane takes delivery of Liebherr LTM 1110-5.2 mobile crane

  • The new 110-tonne crane complements the Wertz crane fleet in the 5-axle class
  • LTM 1110-5.2 delivers great performance and mobility
  • Modern crane control is an important decision criterion

Wertz Autokrane GmbH & Co. Transport KG has taken delivery of a new LTM 1110-5.2 mobile crane. It complements the fleet of the traditional Aachen-based company with a load capacity of between 90 and 150 tonnes. The ability to operate the 5-axle mobile crane with a total weight of 48 tonnes and the advantages of the new Liebherr LICCON3 crane control system were important decision criteria.

"With the new 110-tonne mobile crane, we are expanding our fleet in a key lifting class. It closes the gap between our 4-axle cranes with a lifting capacity of 70 and 90 tonnes and the large cranes from 150 tonnes and above. In addition, crane sizes from 90 to 130 tonnes have been in great demand in our region for years," says Timo Axmacher, authorised signatory at Wertz, explaining the decision in favour of the LTM 1110-5.2. Furthermore, the great service and resale value of the mobile cranes were reasons to order from Liebherr again.

More modern crane control

The LTM 1110-5.2 was the first crane type from Liebherr with the new LICCON3 control system, the third generation of the LICCON control system (Liebherr Computed Control), which takes crane control to a new level: a large touch display in the superstructure cab combines proven operation with state-of-the-art technology. With completely revised software and programming language, a faster data bus, significantly more memory and increased computing power, the system sets new standards in terms of efficiency and user-friendliness. Axmacher says: "The LICCON3 control system has also introduced a number of innovations that make work much easier and more convenient for the crane operator. In addition to technical improvements, e.g. the TraXon DynamicPerform transmission, design enthusiasts will also be delighted by the new aesthetics." Together with the introduction of the LICCON3 control system, Liebherr brought a completely new crane design into series production, which is blazing the trail for the all-terrain series.

Great mobility and flexibility

Powerful load capacities with a 60-metre-long telescopic boom together with excellent global mobility are key characteristics of the LTM 1110-5.2.

The new 5-axle vehicle offers flexible options for use. With 13.4 tonnes of ballast, it achieves axle loads of twelve tonnes, but can also be driven with a total weight of less than 48 tonnes and a maximum axle load of ten tonnes. This makes it adaptable for different transport requirements. For Wertz, the associated flexibility of use was an important decision criterion. "Despite having five axles, the LTM 1110-5.2 is still an ideal "taxi crane". With a basic ballast of 13.4 tonnes and a total weight of 60 tonnes, the crane can already handle a large number of jobs without additional ballast transport. The option of ballasting the crane down to 48 tonnes also enables faster and simplified approval procedures with fewer approval requirements. The LTM 1110-5.2 offers us a wide range of applications and rapid availability, which is crucial for good capacity utilisation in today's world," says Axmacher.

The LTM 1110-5.2, which replaces an LTM 1095-5.1 at Wertz, will also be used for work within the company's own group, for example in scrap and metal recycling, for the company's own assembly team and for demolition work.

Wertz was founded in 1921 and is now run as an owner-managed family business in the third generation. The group employs around 200 people in five divisions: scrap and non-ferrous metal recycling, steel trading and flame cutting, container and waste disposal services, forklift sales, hire and service, mobile cranes, heavy haulage and assembly. Wertz operates 13 mobile and mobile construction cranes in its crane fleet. An LTM 1250-5.1 will be added in the spring.
