Journey to Tema

Two Liebherr mobile harbour cranes, weighing 454 tons each, were lifted onto the weather deck of the multi-purpose heavy-lift vessel BBC Russia in just two days, including lashing for a safe ocean voyage. The cranes, two CBB 3800-250, have a maximum lifting capacity of 250 tons each. The carrying vessel has a deadweight of 12,400 mt, its two Liebherr ship cranes used in the operation have a combined lifting capacity of 500 mt.

LHM 550 busy at New Silk Road

A year ago, our customer Mukran Port Terminals leased a Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour crane. The performance and flexibility of the multipurpose handling machine convinced Mukran Port Terminals to purchase the machine, which is now the third LHM in their crane fleet.

"With the new mobile harbour crane, we are strengthening our position as a multipurpose port for future business in the project cargo sector. We are also taking into account the rapid development of traffic on the New Silk Road via the Mukran Port site as a crucial link," reports Harm Sievers, Managing Director of the operating company Mukran Port Terminals.

"With our trio of Liebherr cranes, we are ideally equipped to meet the increasing demands of the future. The versatility of the LHM 550 fits perfectly with the daily requirements at our terminal," Sievers adds.

Eco STS for Maher in the U.S.

Liebherr Container Cranes will supply three new state-of-the-art ship to shore container cranes to Maher Terminals LLC at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Maher is a champion of Sustainable Port Infrastructure and the STS cranes are a key component of Maher’s comprehensive energy and environmental management programme. The cranes will assist Maher in becoming a Net Zero emissions facility by 2040.

The STS cranes include many environmental benefits. Manufactured using high tensile steel and with a lattice main beam and boom, the resulting lightweight and stiff crane requires less energy to operate than traditional cranes. The crane drives include an active front end, which returns electricity to the grid, whilst the Liebherr Liduro drive systems optimise energy requirements, and power management.

Big businesses need big data

The focus of the LiDAT smartApp is on making processes faster, more environmentally friendly and more cost-efficient. The web application offers the possibility of detailed analysis and shows starting points for improving the efficiency of handling processes. This gives you the opportunity to realise huge competitive advantages. Since its launch in 2018, the software has evolved significantly and established itself as a digital bestseller in the maritime sector. Benefit from the power of big data analytics.

Turn two into three

Uruguayan company Corporación Navios replaced a Liebherr duty cycle crane with a permanently installed harbour crane type FCC 300. The recently erected harbour crane will be used for dry bulk handling of barges in hoppers at the terminal in Nueva Pamlira, Uruguay.

The now total of three harbour cranes is expected to increase the terminal's handling rates and generate operating synergies: the crane operators will work with the same type of crane on all operations.

Looking towards the future

The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority recently took delivery of new Liebherr mobile harbour crane technology. The port is already successfully operating two LHM 280 for bulk handling operation since many years and is now preparing for future challenges. A new LHM 550 will give TLCPA the opportunity to handle bigger grabs and heavier project cargo goods.

“The investment in a third mobile harbour crane creates a more efficient cargo handling performance at the Port of Toledo that results in shorter lay times for cargo vessels,” said Thomas Winston, President and CEO of Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority. “The new crane means further growth for us, not only in the bulk sector, but also in the project cargo business sector. In addition to increasing performance, the LHM 550 is an eco-efficient crane that has a Tier 4 final emissions standard and a highly efficient hydrostatic drive.”
