Liebherr military cranes
Liebherr military cranes – armoured cranes for worldwide military use.
Armoured military cranes are designed fully to meet military requirements. And the main priority is to protect those inside. For this reason, our military cranes have particularly well armoured drivers’ cabs and crane cabs developed in collaboration with the Rheinmetall Group.
Like Liebherr mobile cranes, the military cranes are built on an all-terrain chassis, making them ideal both for off-road use and for driving on public roads.
The powerful telescopic booms can hoist loads of any type quickly and easily. We can supply the armoured recovery crane, known as the G-BKF especially for recovering and towing damaged vehicles. It is a versatile vehicle and an absolute all-rounder for recovering, towing and hoisting.
In addition to the G-BKF, the G-LTM 1090-4.2 armoured mobile crane rounds off our range of special vehicles for military purposes.
Safety is paramount –
personnel protection for the driver and passengers.
The safety of the soldiers is paramount. We collaborate with Rheinmetall Defence, the leading European supplier of military equipment to satisfy the high protection requirements for the crane cab and driver’s cab.
To the site with safety at maximum levels –
the armoured driver’s cab.
The armoured driver’s cab is 250 mm longer than our standard driver’s cab. The benefit of this is that the extensive personal protective equipment for the crew can be stowed in it and all the military communications equipment can be installed in the driver’s cab.
The armoured driver's cab is a double-thickness steel bulkhead construction. The transparent armour provides both ballistic protection and also complies with the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulation, StVZO. The armour has been verified to STANAG 4569/AEP 55.
An ABC safe ventilation system can also be installed in the driver’s cab as an option.
Excellent protection in action –
the armoured crane cab.
The armoured crane cab is made of ceramic to keep its weight low. The specially manufactured ceramic panels are bolted to a steel support structure for this purpose.

Fast and mobile –
excellent off-road manoeuvrability and mobility.
The all-terrain chassis on our armoured military cranes feature the very latest chassis and drive technology to deliver outstanding driving performance even in difficult conditions and on challenging terrain.
The large volume single tyres with runflat elements provide the right grip whilst the 6-cylinder Liebherr engine delivers the power, which is transferred by a ZF gearbox. This means that driving speeds of up to 85 km/h are possible, depending on the model.
Excellent manoeuvrability –
active rear axle steering.
Good track stability at high speed and maximum manoeuvrability are guaranteed by the speed-dependent active rear wheel steering.
The front axle is steered mechanically using the steering wheel. The rear axles are actively steered by an electro-hydraulic system depending on the steering angle and speed.
Our five steering programs deliver maximum flexibility for every application.
To adjust the pressure quickly –
the semi-automatic tyre pressure control system.
If necessary, the tyre pressure can be adjusted between four and nine bar to improve mobility quickly. It is conventional wisdom that increasing the higher contact area significantly improves traction.
Armoured military cranes can climb gradients of up to 60%.

Whatever comes around –
high flexibility in use.
The telescopic booms on our armoured military cranes each have a pivot section and three telescoping parts. The G-LTM also features the time-tested high speed telescoping system,Telematik. The G-BKF has a hydro-mechanical system with a double pulley block.
The booms on both crane models can be extended easily and quickly to any length.
Clever:
LICCON smart crane control system
We develop the software and hardware for the control system in-house. The heart of the system is the LICCON (Liebherr Computed Control) computer system. This forward-thinking control architecture enables it to adapt to the continually growing needs of the market. Liebherr specialists continuously work on developing the system.

Reference project: Delivery to the German Armed Forces
Reference project: 50 cranes for the French Army
In 2002 Liebherr managed to win a major order for the French Army. The order was for a total of 50 LTM 1055/1 AF cranes. The positive features of the standard crane include the following:
- High lifting capacities
- Compact dimensions
- Sensitive manoeuvring in very constricted spaces
- Very good off-road capability
- Driving speeds of up to 80 km/h
Extensive range of comfort and safety equipment and a practical transport concept for crane accessories round off the crane's features.
Reference project: Four military cranes for bridge construction by the Swiss Army
In 2014, four identical LTM 1055-3.2 mobile cranes were delivered to Armasuisse, the procurement department of the Swiss Army. One of the jobs for the all-terrain cranes is building pontoons. To satisfy this requirement, Liebherr designed and produced special accessories for transporting steel bridge supports.
On each trip, each military crane can transport two steel supports and a connection yoke on to the bridge under construction. The elements are then placed on the bridge piles which have previously been driven into the river bed. A wheel loader then surfaces the road. In the meantime the crane is on land picking up the load for the next assembly job.
