Dredging is necessary when sediment settles and leads to shallow water, which impairs the shipping industry. Excavation of sand from the seabed in the course of land reclamation is a further possible application.
In doing so, the duty cycle crawler cranes must endure high dynamic forces. Thanks to their robust design they are perfectly suitable for material handling operation.

The drain of Lago di Luzzone, a reservoir in the Swiss canton of Ticino, has to be freed of deposited sediments. At depths of up to 200 m, a total of 125,000 m³ of material has accumulated in close proximity to the power station of Olivone.
The handling of the HS 8130 is extremely smooth and precise. This contributes immensely to the fact that, so far, the work has progressed according to plan.

HS 8100 in the Port of Hamburg
For years the Port of Hamburg has been fighting with sediment deposits, which cause receding water depths and, therefore, impede the shipping industry. The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) must ensure a water depth of 23 metres for the smooth sailing of vessels.
In order to further advance the dredging work in the Port of Hamburg the HPA chose a Liebherr duty cycle crawler crane, type HS 8100. Not only sediment can be removed but also other waste material such as stones, metal and various bulky goods.
Harbour dredging in Vado Ligure
As one of the major hubs for ferry services to Corsica and Sardinia, the Port of Vado Ligure in northern Italy is in the process of significantly extending its capacities.
Dredging contractor Co.Ed.Mar from Chioggia (Italy) is using its self-propelled barge “Wise” to remove the sediments. It is equipped with a brand new Liebherr duty cycle crawler crane type HS 8130 with hydraulic clamshell bucket. The grab capacity of 6 m³ results in an average turnover of approx. 400 m³ per hour.
There’s always gravel in the Rhine
The Liebherr HS 8030 will never run out of work. Grabs with capacities of either 1 m³ or 2 m³ can be fitted to the HS 8030, depending on requirements. For work with large stones an orange peel grab (polyp) is occasionally used.
Top performance
While mechanical grabs convince with low operating costs, hydraulic models are especially recommended for hard ground conditions.
