New fire brigade crane in Reutlingen – LTM 1070-4.2 from Liebherr convinces with VarioBase®

  • Reutlingen's professional fire brigade has taken delivery of a new LTM 1070-4.2 fire brigade crane from Liebherr
  • The variable VarioBase® support base was an important decision-making criterion.
  • The Liebherr crane will be used as an all-rounder for a wide range of purposes.

Reutlingen's professional fire brigade has a new multi-function machine in its fleet – a Liebherr LTM 1070 4.2 mobile crane with fire service equipment was delivered in November. The fire brigade crane from the global market leader features the latest technology and fantastic reliability. The VarioBase® variable supporting base, which is unique among mobile cranes, was a major decision-making criterion in favour of the 70-tonner from Liebherr.

Liebherr has been involved in the production of fire brigade cranes for more than 40 years. Over 100 of these special cranes with load capacity between 25 and 70 tonnes are now in used by lots of professional services around Europe. Fire brigade cranes from Liebherr are standard cranes with special equipment which have proven themselves suitable for a very wide range of uses.

Reutlingen Fire Brigade described its new LTM 1070-4.2 as an all-rounder. The rescue and operating machine with cable winch and fire-fighting equipment provides technical assistance, is used after road traffic accidents involving trucks, for rescuing people, for hoisting loads and for securing actions at altitudes after explosions or collapses. "The modern machine is needed by the fire brigade to meet the increased requirements for technical rescues", says Harald Hermann, Commander of Reutlingen Brigade Service.

The fire brigade attaches a great deal of value to a variable support system for the mobile crane. At accident sites it is often not possible to extend the supports fully and the crane has to be erected quickly due to the urgency of the situation. The LTM 1070-4.2 with the unique VarioBase® system is therefore ideal for use on a fire brigade crane.

Other requirements that the LTM 1070-4.2 satisfies perfectly include good off-road capability and manoeuvrability due to its all-wheel drive and active rear axle steering. Its 50-metre boom enables it to provide adequate load capacity even at great heights and radii. The all-in concept means that it carries its counterweight and additional equipment with a 12 tonne axle load on public roads.

The new crane replaces a 24 year old 30-tonne model at Reutlingen Brigade Service. This crane was no longer economical due to its high repair costs and frequent failures. What is more, it no longer satisfied the increased requirements, particularly those relating to the higher weights of trucks. The new LTM 1070-4.2 is suitable for a wider range of applications due to its high load capacities and long boom. Investing in the Liebherr crane means that Reutlingen Brigade Service can now rely on good after-sales service and high spare part availability from Liebherr.
