Liebherr's bogie steering device gets off to a successful test start

Federal Austrian Railways ÖBB has recently begun testing the new bogie steering device in four of its type 1016 locomotives on routes around Austria. The in-service trial is conducted as part of the collaboration between ÖBB, the locomotive manufacturer Siemens as well as Liebherr. Testing is due to end in spring 2016.

Liebherr-Transportation Systems has designed and manufactured the bogie steering device. The equipment is based on a new generation of electro-hydraulic actuation technology controlled by a standard controller. This technology is derived from aerospace flight control applications and has been developed by Liebherr for several railway applications. The system substantially reduces lateral forces and minimizes the wear on tracks and wheels as well as noise emissions.
