Liebherr-Transportation Systems Makes its Debut at Railtex 2019 with Innovative Technologies

Liebherr-Transportation Systems participates for the first time in Railtex that will take place from May 14 until 16, 2019 at the National Exhibition Center (NEC) in Birmingham (UK). The company will display innovative solutions such as an air cycle air conditioning unit and “eCAS”, a unique electrohydraulic controlled axle steering system.

On stand # F61 in hall 3, Liebherr will be presenting examples of systems and components and showing visitors its strong innovative capacity in the areas of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC systems), hydraulic actuation systems as well as electronic components for rail vehicles of all kinds.

“Railtex is a great platform and opportunity for us to demonstrate the commitment to our customers and partners in the UK as well as worldwide. We are looking forward to welcoming them at our booth and to presenting our latest innovations and steadily growing portfolio of products and services”, explains Dirk Junghans, Managing Director, Head of Sales, Marketing & Customer Service, Liebherr-Transportation Systems GmbH & Co KG.

100% green: Liebherr’s air cycle air conditioning system

At Railtex 2019, Liebherr-Transportation Systems will be displaying its innovative air cycle air conditioning system. The air cycle technology uses normal air for cooling and is currently the only environmentally friendly alternative to the air conditioning of trains using chemical refrigerants. Liebherr was one of the first companies to apply this “green” technology in trains. Over 100 Liebherr air cycle air conditioning systems are already in use in high speed trains operated by Deutsche Bahn and have proved extremely successful in daily passenger service operation.

Double saving effects by reducing wheel and track wear

A further highlight presented by Liebherr-Transportation Systems at Railtex is an electrohydraulic controlled axle steering (“eCAS”) system. Liebherr, in association with its consortium partners, the UK rail company Grand Central Rail (part of Arriva Group) and NewRail (Centre for Railway Research at Newcastle University) was awarded in 2017 a grant from the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) – along with a funding from the UK Department of Transport – to develop an Active Radial Suspension System (ARSS). The aim of this technology is to reduce wear on both the infrastructure and the vehicles. The ARSS uses electro-hydraulic actuators to actively steer the axles on rail vehicle bogies, thus reducing wheel and track wear. Economically seen, the technology is doubly interesting for rail vehicle operators: Firstly, driving in a way that reduces track wear will lower the Variable Usage Charge. Secondly, the reduction in friction resulting from optimum curve running will also reduce wear on the wheels. This will extend maintenance intervals, which means for example that the expensive wheel replacement can be done much later than usual.

Liebherr-Transportation Systems – Renowned Manufacturer of Railway Technology

Liebherr-Aerospace & Transportation SAS in Toulouse (France) is one of eleven divisional control companies in the Liebherr Group and coordinates all activities in the fields of transportation and aviation equipment. It employs more than 5,800 people worldwide.

Liebherr’s transportation systems division supplies cab and saloon heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, hydraulic actuation systems, dampers and hydraulic load levelling equipment for rail vehicles of all kinds. Liebherr has many years of experience in the development, manufacture, and field service of these technologies, offering support throughout the entire product lifecycle. In addition to its own sales and service centers, the division has access to the Group’s extensive and unique technologies as well as development and service facilities around the world.
