Modern gear skiving impresses visitors
On Skiving Day on March 16, 2023, Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH offered a forum for intensive discussion and questions about the complex technology of gear skiving. Under the motto “Modern gear skiving – the latest in research and practice”, the company presented the various aspects of the process, machines and tools, together with experts from industry and research. And there was even a global premiere: Liebherr presented its LK 500 DC, a gear skiving machine with integrated chamfering device.
The event had a great response, attracting 150 visitors from 15 countries: “We were excited to be able to welcome so many national and international guests to our company”, said Peter Wiedemann, General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH, who was pleased about the success of Skiving Day. With technical presentations and live demonstrations, the company presented the latest developments in gear skiving – including simultaneous translation into English.
As well as in-house speakers, Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH was able to attract numerous experts from research and industry for Skiving Day: Together with guest speakers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU), the Institute of Production Science (wbk), the tool manufacturers Ingersoll, and Kristen + Görmann, and the coating specialist Oerlikon Balzers, the company offered bundled expertise on all aspects of gear skiving.
Dancing vectors, perfect tools
The first part of the event focused on the high demands made of machines and technology in modern gear skiving. The “dancing vectors” – as one of the presentations was entitled – symbolized the highly complex design of process kinematics in the interplay between machine and tool. Liebherr has acquired comprehensive expertise over the years with the holistic concept of Skiving³.
The second part was all about tools and their role in the skiving process. The perfection demanded of a tool begins as early as its simulation and design stage. Liebherr has developed a software for this purpose, LiTool, which enables optimal tool design.
Taking the broader view
The next topic was the gear skiving technologies necessary for a holistic solution: digitalization solutions, measuring technology and coating solutions for tools. The latest research results gave participants a glimpse of the potential of these possibilities.
World premiere: Live presentation of the LK 500 DC
A further highlight was the live presentation of various Liebherr machines. The gear skiving machine LK 500 DC with integrated ChamferCut device for chamfering during the machining process was shown for the very first time; it will be officially presented at the EMO in Hanover in September 2023.
The visitors used the event for discussion and networking and were enthusiastic. Pierpaolo Sanavia, Head of Production of the Italian transmission manufacturer Toffac Ingranaggi S.p.A., praised the event: “The skiving day was very well organized and certainly provided food for thought.” Jari Vesanen from the Finnish company Tasowheel Oy, a manufacturer of customer-specified gearing solutions for different sectors, summarized: “A great event with a lot of fascinating content.”
